FAQ

I found a stray cat. Will The Cat Welfare Association (CWA) help, if so, how?
First it is helpful to identify if the cat is actually a stray or someone’s lost cat. CWA or any veterinarian can check for a microchip. Put up posters in your neighborhood, and post to social media with a photo of the cat. Check Pet FBI for missing cat posts. If the cat is a friendly stray that you can hold in your arms, call us at (614) 268-6096 and select the INTAKE option to see if we have space to accept the cat.

I no longer want my pet cat. Will CWA help, if so, how?
Our mission is to help the stray cat population. We always accept pets that were adopted from Cat Welfare; however because of our space limitations we cannot accept all cats. Please view this list for organizations that may be able to accept and rehome your pet.

I adopted from CWA and would like to return my cat. Can I?
Yes. Call us to make an appointment (614) 268-6096.

My cat needs medical care and I can’t afford it. Can CWA help?
We have a Good Sam Fund and if your cat is eligible, we will schedule an appointment at one of our partnering vets. You will be responsible for a copay payable to the veterinarian, and Cat Welfare’s Good Sam Fund will pay the balance of your visit. For more information, call us at (614) 268-6096.

I lost my cat. What do I do?
Click here for tips to lure your cat back home. Post your cat on Pet FBI. Hang up fliers in your neighborhood with a photo if possible, and your cat’s name, colors, description of markings, if declawed, if wearing a collar, if spayed or neutered, etc. Also bring a flier to our shelter, or email to us. Call shelters in the area (Columbus Humane, Colony Cats, Cozy Cat Cottage, and more).

I would like to make a donation to CWA. What do you accept?
We accept financial donations to any of our different funds. See our Donate page. We also appreciate purchases from our Amazon and Chewy wish lists. If you have other donations, call us to see if we can accept. Thank you for your support.

How do I become a member?

What is FIV? Can I adopt an FIV+ cat?
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, or FIV, is a disease that compromises the immune system in cats. It cannot be spread to humans. Most cases of cat FIV come through an infected cat passing it to another through a deep bite. Outdoor cats are especially vulnerable as they may end up in a territorial dispute that leads to such an injury. A mother cat infected with the cat FIV virus can pass it to her kittens. While FIV is contagious, cats do not transmit the virus by sharing an eating bowl with other cats or through other feline contact actions like social grooming, sneezing or sharing a litter box. You can adopt an FIV+ cat, and they can safely live with healthy FIV- cats.
